Surname Saturday: HILLIS

The HILLIS line is where I have my favorite brick wall. Favorite may not be the right word, but one of these days I will find the record to prove who the parents of George E HILLIS were, not just my conclusions.

George E HILLIS was born May 1857 in Rising Sun, Ohio county, Indiana. On 5 Sep 1886 he married Mary Susan WASHBURN in Hamilton county, Ohio. He died 31 Mar 1917 in Rising Sun, Ohio county, Ohio. He was buried in Rising Sun Cemetery, but no gravestone has been found.

The known children of George and Mary were:
  • Joseph Mills HILLIS born 24 Dec 1887 in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio. In the 1917 WWI draft, he was living in El Paso, Texas. About 1922, he married Margaret. They lived in El Dorado, Butler county, Kansas where he died in May 1974.
  • Francis Marion HILLIS born 13 Dec 1888 in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio. He married Mary Ann JOHNSTON on 6 Feb 1926 in Cincinnati. He died 12 Oct 1977 in Rising Sun, Ohio county, Ohio and is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
  • Sylvia C HILLIS was born 13 Aug 1892 in Kentucky or Indiana. She married Sidney Sayers CLEMENTS on 2 Oct 1915. In 1930, they were living in Kenton county, Kentucky.
  • Alice Susan HILLIS was born 1 Apr 1896 in Rabbit Hash, Boone county, Kentucky. She married Dewey Francis BASCOM on 10 Jan 1917 in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn county, Indiana. She died 31 Jul 1979 in Deer Park, Hamilton county, Ohio and is buried in Arlington Memorial Garden. She is my great grandmother.
  • Vallie I HILLIS was born 16 Nov 1898 in Indiana. She married Fred HESS around 1923. She died 14 Jan 1994 in Rising Sun, Ohio county, Indiana and was buried in Cedar Hedge Cemetery.
  • George HILLIS was born about 1901 in Indiana.
  • Barrett Guy HILLIS was born 30 Dec 1906 in Indiana. He married Gladys GRIFFITH. He died 15 Jul 1995 in Montgomery, Hamilton county, Ohio and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.
  • Unknown HILLIS born 8 Apr 1909 and died 7 Jul 1909 in Ohio county, Indiana.
  • Willard HILLIS born stillborn on 29 Feb 1912.

  1. Tina, I enjoyed looking at part of your RootsWeb site, and only hope that I can find an ancestor there. I've been following you a while, and know how thorough you are. If I find something on your tree, it would be a gift to me! You have a Blodget who is from Chelmsford, MA, the next town over from me. Small world.
