Surname Saturday: WASHBURN

Mary Susan WASHBURN was my second great grandmother. She was the daughter of Francis Marion WASHBURN and Lovina MATTHEWS.

Francis was born 3 Jul 1839 in Coolville, Athens county, Ohio. He served in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the civil war. He married Lovina MATTHEWS on 14 Oct 1865 in Porter, Gallia County, Ohio. Lovina died in 1883 and Francis became the third husband of Malinda KNABB TOWNSLEY MARKLEY. Francis died 18 Feb 1912 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.

The children of Francis and Lovina were:

• Mary Susan WASHBURN born 28 Sep 1866 in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. She married George E HILLIS on 5 Sep 1888 in Cincinnati. She died 19 Apr 1919 in Cincinnati and was buried in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana.
• Lizzie Gertrude WASHBURN born 17 Oct 1868 in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio and died there on 24 Feb 1869.
• Myrtle Ione WASHBURN born 3 Nov 1873 in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. She married Silas Barrett WATERS. She died 24 Mar 1951 in Cincinnati.
• Sylvia Cynthia WASHBURN born 29 Jan 1878 in Cincinnati and died 29 Jun 1934 in Cincinnati.
  

Francis was the youngest son of Roswell WASHBURN and Leura CLEVELAND. Leura died when Francis was 6 days old and he was raised by Craig and Susan DUTTON. (Susan is a cousin of Roswell in some way that I haven't explored fully.)

Roswell was born 8 Dec 1793 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He married Leura CLEVELAND on 21 Nov 1824 in Lodi, Athens County, Ohio. After Leura's death, he married Anna Wesley PARSONS on 3 Feb 1847 in Coolville, Athens County, Ohio. He died 17 May 1874 in Coolville.

• Alvira Leura WASHBURN (1 April 1829-) married John BARTLETT (about 1825-).
• Jackson Gordon Holmes WASHBURN (26 October 1830-)
• Andrew Jackson WASHBURN (7 October 1832-11 February 1837)
• 3-Elizabeth Rachel WASHBURN (15 December 1834-) married Calvary Morris COLE (about 1832-).
• Melancthon Eleazer WASHBURN (20 April 1836-) married Mary Elizabeth THOMPSON (31 October 1847-).
• Cynthia Ann WASHBURN (8 October 1837-) married Hiram Bennett CALDWELL (12 April 1834-before 1900)
• Francis Marion WASHBURN (3 July 1839-18 February 1912) married Lovina MATTHEWS (14 March 1840-19 December 1883).

Roswell and Anna's children were:

• Alice Lucinda WASHBURN (16 December 1847-) married Marshall HUMPHREY (25 February 1846-12 July 1885).
• Rosella Amanda WASHBURN (10 November 1849-22 April 1941) married Robert Mitchell MCGATH (21 August 1845-8 September 1917).
• Flora Marinda WASHBURN (30 September 1851-)
• Ida May Roxana WASHBURN (17 April 1854-) married James Gatten FISH (19 November 1857-).
• Buchanan Elbridge WASHBURN (1 November 1856-18 August 1884) married Deborah Elizabeth GROVE (13 March 1860-).

Roswell was the son of Eleazer WASBHURN and Wratchel PAULK. Their other children were:
